Okay there hasnt been really any notable Anime News in the past week/week and a half and with the release of Minecraft on the 360 ive kindof been sucked into that since its just amazing.
So instead this post is going to be about Minecraft and the other games that are voxel based that are on the 360.
First up is Minecraft i love this game ive been playing it ever since my friend showed it to me about a year and a half ago or more i cant remeber. My computer isnt very good so while i can still play the computer version and i play it alot my frame rate is at a sad 15fps or less T_T. But anyways with the release of Minecraft on the 360 i have not stopped playing it except to go to work and do my finals. First i have to say is 4J studios did an excellent job bringing Minecraft over from the PC version to the xbox the only thing that i dont like is that the world is small its 1000×1000 squares now it seems small to the people that play the PC version since that is near infinte but 1000×1000 squares is pretty big you still have plenty of room to do things and build stuff and not only that but you have the surface, underground, and the nether to build its more then enough room for what is currently in the game.
The xbox version is where the PC version was at in beta 1.6 so it has everything before the big adventure update except for pistons and sheers which for the time being i can live without. The xbox version will be getting updates regularly i know the next major update will bring pistons and sheers along with whatever the 1.7 update had for the PC along with some bug fixes. What im really looking forward to for the future is the Adventure update where i hope they expand the map since the Adventure update was a huge update that introduced alot it needs alot more room. This is all wishful thinking though but i have a feeling that they will expand the map for the Adventure update i know they wanted to maximize frame rate for the initial launch and now that they have something really solid to go off of i belive they can do it.
But what makes this game great isnt the what if’s and the possibilities its the game play this version is back to basic’s minecraft before hunger where digging and finding iron was a feat of its own since later PC updates iron was really really common for me now in the 360 version i have to keep digging and hope to find some ive played a good 10 hours and i only have 53 iron ingots so it is back to the time where just finding iron was an accomplishment let alone finding diamonds. Wolfs are in the game but i have only found 1 so far so they are pretty rare or at least they are to me.
I really dont know what else to say its an amazing game once you look past the graphics and to those people that say a game is only good if it has good graphics you are truly missing out. I have already gotten 3 of my friends hooked into Minecraft since they dont have computers of their own and they have been endlessly playing it like i have. And the game is 100x more fun when you are playing with friends. So everyone at least try the demo of the game because it is worth the 20$ to spend on the game it really is.
Now onto the indie games that are voxel based games like Minecraft (and for all you fans and creators of this games no i did not say they are Minecraft clones)
Total Miner- okay i only played the demo but i was not impressed with the demo at all the world seems smaller then the minecraft 360 world since it takes me less time to get from one edge of the world to the other. And the one thing that i really really really hated was the fact that you have to find the recipes for objects before you can build them….. I mean really? that is just annoying i wanted to make a new pickaxe but i couldnt because i didnt have the recipe >.>…. The game is vastly inferior and i do not recommend you get it.
CastleMiner- I only played CastleMiner not CastleMiner Z and again i only played the demo because i really dont want to waste my money on a game if it sucks. There is an online and offline mode which is something Total miner didnt have or i didnt see it and there are different world types. CastleMiner seems to be just a creative type game. The map seems pretty big from what i could tell but the movements were kindof clunky and sure it had from what i could tell more blocks then minecraft but more blocks doesnt make a game better. And if your looking for a purely creative game like this i would go with FortressCraft not CastleMiner.
Which brings us to our last Indie block style game
FortressCraft- This one i actually bought when it first came out i heard about it on a forum and checked it out and it looked really interesting the creator said he had a plan and the first game to be released would be a creative mode type game and i was like okay seems cool so when it came out i bought it and there were some bugs but every game has bugs at some point or another so it didnt bother me to much. i was more interested in helping him by buying this version so he could get his other chapters of his game out. He originally had a plan that he would have like 6-7 chapters now i cant find the post that originally said that since its been a good year or so. Now at first FortressCraft was your pretty basic creative type game it had a decent sized map to play and create what you wanted on it. It had relics which you had to find which gave you ability’s like faster running, higher jump, jetpack, tnt explosions and a few other cool things but when we get right down to it it was a creative type game i built some stuff had my friends join me and build more stuff and blow some stuff up but after about 2 weeks we got bored and didnt touch it again for awhile. I follow the creator on twitter hoping i would hear about news of when the survival chapter was gonna come out but as months went by it was just adding more stuff to the creative chapter and i just went back into it today to see what all has changed in the last 3 months i have played it so here are some of the features it has.
- Giant ugly looking spawn point (this thing pisses me off so much because it gets in the way and just looks god awful the only thing good about it is the workshop.)
- The workshop lets you make your own blocks and this is a pretty cool concept because you can make different things with it.
- Many different items like the pickaxe (slandered breaking and placing blocks), the ray gun( just destroys blocks), the ban hammer (bans people), the lil digger (place it down and it digs for you), a dump truck thing(places whatever block you want down for you), copy and place option (pretty cool for lazy people), a laser type thing (it just keeps placing objects or gets rid of them), and then a teleporter (for lazy people).
- It has options to change many different things like 3d particles, tectonic rise, lock time of day and some other stuff.
- with friends you can play freezetag and spleef
- you can also change visual settings
All in all if your looking for a just purely creative game FortressCraft is the way to go (at least untill Minecraft 360 brings creative mode to there game in a future update). But what urks me about FortressCraft is that he keeps working on this creative mode game and the more i play it the more bored i get because he has added so much useless crap into it when i want to play a creative game i just want to place blocks to build whatever i want whenever i want not have all this other shit in it and i dont think i will buy another one of his FortressCraft chapters even if he decides to release it because all in all Minecraft is better.
After playing though all these games i know the creators went though alot of time to put them together and test them and hope to get some sales only to be surprised by the amount of sales they got but they are doing the same thing the rock band did and that is riding off the popularity of a very successful game but bringing new things to the table in a sense. Sure these indie games on xbox are alot cheaper so if you really want to you can buy them but once you do get Minecraft you will understand that you wasted your money on the other games you just cant compare them at all.
And yes i am writing this knowing full well that some of the comments i might get will be from fanboys of these indie games that dont want to listen to anyone else but i am writing this because i wanted to state my opinion on the games in whole now i know i didnt give a full review on CastleMiner and TotalMiner but i just wasnt impressed with the demo enough to buy it to give it a full review so im sorry to the people that love those games.
And another note i normally dont do review or comparisons but i just wanted to do this for fun =P i suck at reviews and stuff like that so i just wrote my thoughts on everything hope you all have a good day.
